I watched Melancholia two nights ago. It’s crushing. Particularly the first part of the film. Kirsten Dunst is wonderful, because you truly believe in her capacity to unravel the happiest day of her life. I think it’s one of the most visceral portrayals of depression I’ve seen, because she is so clearly trying to avoid her sadness. Everything just becomes too overwhelming. Even the little, everyday things are too hard, and there is no where to escape her own emptiness.
