I just saw the Soho Rep’s production of Uncle Vanya with Michael Shannon and Merritt Weaver. The show has just the right understated, intensity of feeling (so important to any Chekhov production). The actors are all exquisitely cast. Michael Shannon is captivating as Astrov. He is simultaneously world weary and unpredictably powerful, like an animal bored with his cage. Merritt Weaver is heartbreaking as Sonya. She is so filled with delicacy and intimate warmth for her companions that you desperately want the world to be a place where she can win.
