The Smell of Fall

by thecustomhouse

Everyone has a smell that reminds them of autumn, and more specifically, of autumn in a place they love.  For four years, I lived and was enchanted by Santa Fe, NM.  Autumn smells like roasting green chiles and pinon wood to me.  Nothing can quite replicate the former, but luckily a friend of mine found something for the latter… recreating a sensation out of the context of its native time and place is such a mysterious mix of  melancholy and contentment.  I wish they had a name for that feeling, a kind of happy longing that makes you realize you did something right along the way.
